This is the Speaker of the House nominating speech Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries needs for the 1/6/23 speaker vote.

The beginning of the 118th US House of Representatives has shown the abject failure of the MAGA GOP party to conduct the most basis function of governance. As we get ready for the 12th vote for Speaker of the House, the most since the Speaker election of 1824, it’s time for a bold statement by House Democratic Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries in his next nomination speech. This is a bold call, yet the time now warrants bold action.

So, if I was a speechwriter for Leader Jeffries, I would draft the following nominating speech for a member of House Democratic Leadership to give:

“Madame Clerk, I rise for the purpose of nominating the Hon. Hakeem Jeffries for the position of Speaker of the House.

Now, we have heard twelve different rationales for a Speaker of the House to come for the current Republican caucus leader and more than twelve rationales for alternative candidates for other members of the Republican Caucus and one for the former, twice impeached, leader of the MAGA insurrection and the January 6th terrorist attack on our capital, which endangered the lives of every member of Congress, our staff, Capitol staff and our brave members of the Capitol Police, DC Metro Police, National Guard and other law enforcement who stood in the breach to frankly save our lives. I’ve heard members of the other party speak of the “mandate” that the “American people gave them”…
